Culture of excellence brings out each boy's best
Brisbane Grammar School is independent and non-denominational, embracing diversity and focusing on providing an education that creates the best start in life for the thinkers and leaders of tomorrow. BGS culture is distinctive, balancing the highest academic standards with a rich array of sporting and cultural activities. Our graduates attend the world’s leading universities, lead their chosen careers and professions and make their own futures.
As Brisbane’s first secondary school for boys, Brisbane Grammar School has been a leader in education in Queensland since its foundation in 1868. Our pursuit of excellence extends to our ambition to be the best school for boys in Australia. To achieve this, BGS has created world-class boarding facilities to complement our leading boarding program.
BGS Boarding has undergone a $5 million redevelopment to provide leading facilities with an individual, modern room for each boy in Years 5 to 8 (Griffith House) and Years 9 to 12 (Harlin House). Griffith House opened in 2020, and Harlin House was completed in Term 1 2022.
Middle School (Years 5 to 8) and Senior School (Years 9 to 12) boys benefit from the School’s state-of-the-art facilities, providing tailored educational and boarding environments for boys of different ages. Our boarders benefit from additional academic enrichment programs, extensive weekend activities and the lifelong connections unique to the residential setting.
In Spring Hill, across from Roma Street Parkland, the campus has two precincts: a Middle School for Years 5 to 8 and a Senior School from Years 9 to 12.
The School’s broad liberal education develops students who are critical, reflective and creative thinkers. A special teaching framework provides skills to tackle the demands of Queensland’s new ATAR assessment system.
The School’s new STEAM Precinct – estimated for completion in late 2023 – will be a physical extension of Brisbane Grammar School’s educational philosophy to develop critical, reflective and creative thinkers with the capacity and enthusiasm for independent, lifelong learning. The precinct will exemplify our commitment to being a thinking institution and will shape the way we educate BGS boys for decades to come.
The boarding experience reflects the School’s values. BGS Boarding has a respectful community with a high regard for learning, leadership and endeavour. Staff focus on the holistic wellbeing of boys to help them fulfil their individual potential.
Cocurricular sports, art, drama, music, clubs and activities cater for boys wanting to learn new skills and make new friends, through to elite performers with the highest aspirations.
Student wellbeing is central to the School’s mission. BGS supports boys to be happy, confident and resilient, both at school and as lifelong learners. Students are encouraged to take part in public purpose programs specific to each year level, to foster a sense of service and connection to the wider community.
As part of its unique educational experience for boys, Brisbane Grammar School also provides students with adventure-based programs at the School’s Outdoor Education Centre at Moogerah, west of Brisbane.
