Welcome to Queensland. Our first Former Boarder Success Story from a Queensland School is a St Margaret’s Girl; the lovely Courtney Gemmell.
Courtney is passionate about children’s education and a true country girl at heart. We found out about her experiences at boarding school in Brisbane and what she’s up to now.
1. What Boarding School did you go to?
I went to St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School in Ascot from grade 8 to 12.
2. What was your best experience at Boarding School?
The best part of boarding school was living with your best friends, and the lifelong friendships I made with girls from throughout Australia.
3. What is your favourite memory from Boarding School?
One of my favourite memories would have to be the first weekend of the school year when we would go to Wet’n’ Wild as a whole boarding house. I also loved the outings to Ballymore Football that we would have throughout rugby season.
4. What are you doing now?
I am currently in my final year of Bachelor of Education Primary at QUT. Before that I studied Graphic Design and spent 2 years working at Boeing Aeroplanes, then 2 years overseas in London.
5. Has anything you learnt at Boarding School helped you with your current career?
Boarding school taught me tolerance, and understanding of other people’s feelings and lives. It also taught me the value of the friends and networks we form at school and how those contacts stay with you forever, especially for future employment.
6. Any advice for young kids going to Boarding School?
NAME everything!
Be yourself. In the end it’s better to be a stronger character, someone who is their own person, rather than someone who follows and copies everyone else!
