We’re back for another year of sharing the great news and stories of our Aussie’ boarding schools. 2025 promises to deliver the goods when it comes to having access to information and the ability to explore your options, or even see what other schools are up to.
Here at BSEA we have been working on some terrific new partnerships, stay tuned for news on some of those in my next newsletter.
I can tell you that our Emerald Expo is off the charts! 20 Queensland schools coming together under one roof for the families of central/northern Queensland. Before we hand over to Ascham, I would like to say we’re thinking of our North Queensland families as the floods continue to wreak havoc in many regions. I have been in touch with our Townsville and Charters Towers schools and whilst they are all ok, they’re very mindful that many of their families are affected. We hope recovery is swift and well supported.
Today the reins go over to the team at Ascham. Since 1887 Ascham School has been embracing their country girls, providing an embracing and rigorous approach to living and learning.
If I had to highlight three things that have always caught my attention at Ascham it would have to be their academic program, the Dalton Plan (read about that below); their location in Sydney’s eastern suburbs within 5km of Sydney’s CBD (there’s a link on that below); and their commitment to their boarders – redeveloping accommodation and boarding houses to ensure that rural and regional students continue to be able to immerse themselves in all that Ascham has to offer.
Whether you’re already on your way through the boarding school years, just beginning your search or on the other side of them, these Takeovers provide an authentic insight into Australian boarding schools.
Enjoy and thank you again to Ascham School.
Welcome to living at Ascham!
Healthy and happy. Strongly connected. Thriving learners. Lifelong friendships.
These are just a few phrases to describe Ascham boarders.
Since 1887, generations of boarders have excelled at our unique school. Hailing from country NSW, Sydney suburbs, interstate and overseas, our diverse cohort of around 120 boarders is filled with students who are secure and happy in their surroundings.
We take great care to provide a supportive and immersive learning environment for our boarders as they embrace Ascham’s unique learning framework, the Dalton Plan. Evening ‘Prep’ offers them specialist expertise through our dedicated Prep Tutors, drawn from academic teaching staff and recent Ascham graduates. After hours and weekends are filled with sporting and co-curricular activities, where girls extend close friendships and experience the best of study/life balance.
Four Boarding Houses offer a relaxed atmosphere, each with experienced, live-in Heads of House and Boarding Coordinators. A brand-new state-of-the-art Boarding House is currently in development, adding to our collection of comfortable homes on campus.
Our central location is the envy of many; being only 3km from the CBD, 5km from beaches and with transport on the doorstep, our boarders thrive in Sydney’s cultural vibrancy and unique natural surroundings.

Prep and Academic Support
Ascham’s unique Dalton Plan in Australia emphasises supportive learning for boarders.
Boarding Prep involves specialised tutoring by academic staff and recent graduates, focusing on Dalton’s principles: collaboration, responsibility, reflection, independence.
The Boarding Prep Coordinator works with a network of professionals to enhance academic standards.
A Very Special Partnership
Since 2021, Ascham has enjoyed a unique partnership that has brought boarders and dogs together in a mutually beneficial and very affectionate relationship.
As official ‘Puppy Raisers’ with Guide Dogs Australia, Ascham boarders and staff participate in an impactful community service opportunity, while having a gorgeous pup to love.
Sage Advice for New Boarders
If you ask Ascham’s elected student Head of Boarding for 2025, Skye Simpson, about her predominant feeling when she embarked on her boarding journey in 2020, she would say it was ‘uncertainty’.
Now in Year 12, Skye regards living on campus as a highlight of her high school experience.
