The benefits of a boarding school education
If you’re seeking academic excellence, along with a supportive environment to help your child thrive, boarding schools are a great option. It’s for this reason (as well as living in remote locations) that many parents in Melbourne, and around Australia, search for boarding schools to give their children the best chance at success.
There are a whole host of reasons why families choose to send their children to boarding school, not least of which being the quality of education on offer. Many of these schools have a well-deserved reputation for delivering quality education, with boarding schools in Melbourne being no exception. With a friendly and inclusive community, many boarding schools in Melbourne welcome and encourage local and international students.
Apart from their impressive academic standing, there’s another prominent reason as to why boarding schools enjoy such popularity not just in Melbourne, but across all of Australia – Personal Growth.
Just as important as honing their intellect, students learn to adopt responsibility, integrity and resilience as they grow and become responsible members of society. The intimate and well-rounded nature of boarding schools and their ability to impart valuable life skills goes a long way in supporting the personal growth of students.
Between the curriculum, extracurricular activities, cultural diversity and an underlying sense of independence, boarders gain the necessary qualities needed to transition into university and the wider world. They enjoy a wider cultural perspective, a deepened critical outlook and enhanced adaptability as they enter the next stages of their life.
To help you decide what’s best for your child (and your family) we have developed a checklist of questions to consider.
How do you prepare your child for boarding school?
It’s only natural that your child might feel a bit anxious about starting the next chapter of their life away from home in a boarding school. But rest assured there are steps your family can do to put your child at ease and make the whole transition a comfortable one.
Boarding schools present a positive learning environment for students—this is what your child should feel. To your boy or girl for the life of a boarding student, here are a few things you can do:
- Involve your child in the process of picking a school. They’re the ones boarding after all.
- If they’re looking for something particular in a boarding school, write it down. Having a wish list should help you narrow down your search for the ideal school.
- Talk to your child about the move and tell them what to expect. What are they most excited about and what are they most worried about? Try to address any concerns they have early on.
- Let them know that it’s normal to be nervous and every student is going through the same thing. Remind them of what a great opportunity this is to make new, lifelong friends.
- Reassure them that they’ll still be able to talk to you on a regular basis. And when you visit them in person or talk to them over the phone, be sure you’re always positive and enthusiastic!
We’ve also prepared a more extensive range of questions to ask when you’re in search of a boarding school in Melbourne.
But perhaps most importantly, it’s best for you and your child to keep sight of the big picture. While your child may live and study in a boarding school and will be away from family, there are some things that will never change.
All the boarders will be in a caring environment with teachers and other staff members who are always ready to help them no matter the situation.
