Cranbrook School is an independent Anglican day and boarding school for boys, Pre-school to Year 12, located four kilometres from the heart of Sydney. On our beautiful campus overlooking Sydney Harbour, boarders enjoy unrestricted access to exceptional facilities and expansive sporting grounds.
Boarding at Cranbrook offers boys a strong supportive home in an educational environment epitomising creativity and exploration. We are committed to providing boys with an all-encompassing boarding experience teaching them to be independent, responsible for themselves and others, so they grow into self-confident young men.
Cranbrook has two Boarding Houses which together care for approximately 80 students from Year 7 to Year 12. There is a balanced mix of boys from Sydney, rural Australia and overseas. Our Boarding Housemasters live on site and have families of their own. Both Housemasters have extensive boarding experience and understand the pastoral needs of raising boys and the challenges they can face as they progress through teenage years. Each Housemaster is supported by three resident members of teaching staff, male and female.
Last year the two Boarding Houses underwent a thorough refurbishment resulting in exceptional facilities that meet the demands of growing young men. The culture of our Boarding Houses is not developed simply by the physical space alone but how the space is utilised to integrate, to share, to live together as a family and form deep bonds.
Cranbrook's vision is to be: A world class school which encourages and enables all of our students to explore, enjoy and fulfil their potential.
Boarding at Cranbrook involves learning that continues beyond normal school hours. With access to the school’s exceptional academic facilities, boarding empowers the boys to recognise their own unique potential and are provided with a level of academic advantage that is only possible from working alongside both other boarders and academic staff after hours.
Supported by an outstanding boarding academic team, the opportunities for learning beyond the classroom are extensive. Boarders can easily access the early morning extension classes and academic clinics. With no travel time to factor in to their timetable the boys can put the extra time gained to study, sport and music and all the other co-curricular activities offered.
Time is designated for completing homework and tutoring, and is carefully managed. Close communication between the class teachers and Boarding House staff ensures that the boys’ study programme meets expectations, as well as the creation of personalised study plans for the boys in Years 11 and 12.
Many of Cranbrook’s boarders appear on the Headmaster’s List for Outstanding Academic Effort and regularly achieve higher average grades than day boys, indicative of the significant resources that are made available to the boarding community.
Physical fitness and mental agility go hand in hand, reinforcing an acuteness of perspective. The Cranbrook sports programme is both deep and wide, and one of inclusiveness, opportunity, and competition. We encourage the balance between the team and the individual as well as place great importance on the ongoing cultivation of skills, training and conditioning.
The lessons learned while playing sport at Cranbrook extend far beyond the playing field, pitches and courts, ultimately shaping young men’s personalities and lives. One of our most prominent and accomplished sporting alumni, Steve Solomon, is now studying medicine at the Stanford University after accepting their athletic scholarship.
Creative Arts Programme
We place great importance on the enduring value of the arts. Participation in these programmes aims to develop skills in leadership, performance, creativity and decision-making. The performing and creative arts form a valuable part of our community life and the qualities of cooperation, as much as contest, are truly apparent within the school.
